Glenn Beck: 'God Help us all'
by Mark Silva
"What's the secret sauce?'' Glenn Beck is asked about the popularity of his FOX News Channel program in an interview with Newsmaxsort of like a Keith Olbermann interview in Ramparts.
"America is looking for someone, whether you agree or disagree, who will say the truth,'' Beck says. "Because I am a recovering alcoholic, when I hit the bottom, I promised to the Lord that, if he would take the guilt away... I would serve him... and I have done that...
"You may not agree with me,'' Beck says, but he will tell it like it is.
Why is the "Left'' hysterical about him? ("Any college kids that are watching,'' host Chris Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax Media, notes in an aside to the audience, "don't tell your professors that you watch Glenn Beck. You'll get an F.''
"It mainly goes for the Left, but there are some of those who are political animals only. They are not tied to values. They are tied to politics and power,'' Beck tells Ruddy. "They don't understand that people actually care about things... can weep for their country, can love something so much that they are willing to set everything aside for that... ''
"We're not a market. America is an idea, and it's a collection of different ideas,'' Beck says. "They want to put a cap on it.''
Sarah Palin has commended Beck for doing an extraordinary job, Ruddy notes, yet Beck goes after Republicans when it's deserved.
"The shine came off of George Bush for me pretty quickly after 9/11,'' Beck says. "I thanked God that we had somebody that strong... But then we started to not fight a war to win the war. Wars are a horrible ugly... It's killing people. The idea is killing them faster than they can kill you... We weren't doing that. And now we're in this long, drawn-out war... That made me look at him and say... we're fighting this war not to win it anymore, and I don't know why.''
Beck once went for an off-the-record talk with Bush. Would he go have a near-beer with President Barack Obama?
"Schmooz, no,'' Beck replies. "I respect the office of the president of the United States, no matter what I think about his policies. I feel like Ronald Reagan did about the Oval Office. You wear a jacket, respect for the office... I would go because I was asked by the president of the United States... Do I think we'd have a meaningful conversation? I know I would, because I speak directly... But I don't think he necessarily would.''
Few politicians, he says, talk straight.
One of Obama's own "czars'' has spoken favorably of the "revolution'' of Venezuela's Hugo Chavezanother "Marxist, or Communist or Fascist'' in the government -- Beck says. A "revolution'' that includes national control of the media? A "key is being turned'' in the government right now, Beck warns.
"I truly fear the groundwork -- this is so far beyond Obama,'' Beck says. "I want to do a special on who's on the other end of the side of the BlackBerry?, who's on the other end of the BlackBerry?... This is bigger than Obama.... I fear an event, I fear a Reichstag moment, God forbid another 9/11, something that will turn this machine on, and power will be seized and voices will be silenced. God help us all.''
Bill To Allow Same-Sex Marriage Introduced In D.C.
The bill was almost certain to pass and had been expected for some time. But whether it becomes law is more complicated because Congress gets to review D.C. legislation before it takes effect. In July, the city began recognizing same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.
