Leonard Nimoy: 'Left, then back to center'

by Mark Silva

Now that the return of Star Trek is being hailed as "the first blockbuster of the Obama era,'' it's probably good political advice that Leonard Nimoy is offering, with his tip on how to brace for impact when the Enterprise is attacked:

"Go left, then back to center,'' Nimoy, a.k.a. Mr Spock, tells comedy show host Jimmy Fallon, in coaching the crew of the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show through a mock collision.

Left, then back to center -- the political formula for the Obama campaign and presidency?

Out there in the blogosphere, which is a realm where even starships dare not go, they are suggesting that there is something politically metaphorical about the new Trek:

"In 1966, Star Trek reflected a yearning to make the world (i.e. universe) better and find a way for people to live together peacefully,'' cartoonist and illustrator Ward Sutton writes at the Huffington Post. "The crew of the Enterprise worked for the collective good.

"Now in the post-Bush world (what a continuing joy it is to type those words), America's focus has again returned to facing our problems pragmatically instead of ignoring them. The return of Star Trek reflects the return to valuing science, the seeking of progress, the rebuilding of a Great Society.

"Will right-wingers label it "Socialist Trek"?''

Left, then back to center.

Judge No Longer A Believer In Unfettered Markets

Richard Posner is one of the county's leading libertarian thinkers. He and his compatriots at the University of Chicago have put their trust in free, unfettered and barely regulated markets. But Posner's had a recent change of heart. You get clue in the title of his new book, A Failure of Capitalism.
